Mixed MediaI am preoccupied with Humankind's abandonment of the past. Vacant dwellings are inhabited by skulking animals and the observant ghosts of former occupants. The backgrounds supporting these images are layered, ethereal abstracts which exist outside of time. The patterns represent shreds of organic material slowly unraveling - the fragmentation of past worlds. I use layers of acrylic paint, exotic paper, rendered collage and beeswax. I build one layer and then take it down to expose that beneath. By adding and subtracting I create a depth of field that hints of microbiological secrets. My process is organic and non-objective, with figurative elements suggesting themselves along the way. It is through my trust in the process that the finished pieces emerge as they do, unconditionally. Each piece is its own story, with an unknown ending. They are a brief glimpse into a stranger's dream; or a tangled memory. Either way, I like to think they portray a sense of yearning. The yearning to keep hold of the familiar past while longing for the new in an unexplored future. |
